Historic bits

New York, despite its modern flare, is one of the oldest cities in the United States. There is a LOT of history to be explored around the city, but I just hit a few that were close by.  Here is a small sampling.

Macy's and the Empire State Building.

And William Seward. Thank him for Alaska, among other things

Lady Liberty

The one request my students had when I left was, "PLEASE go see the Statue of Liberty!"

I didn't make it. But I DID ride the Staton Island Ferry there and back to snap a few pictures!  Here's the best of the ferry ride collection.  Enjoy!

Around NYC

Saturday I essentially walked the length of Manhattan. That's a lot of walking. We started in the most northern part of Central Park. 

And then we kept walking south...

We watched some local adult leagues play their baseball games in the park. 

Continuing south we walked passed the new Freedom Tower where the World Trade Center stood before 9/11. 

Even further south we walked by the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street. 

Then we walked by Federal Hall where George Washington took the oath of office as our very first President of the Unites States. 

And we kept walking. And walking and walking... 

Miss Davis Goes to NYC

It's been 3 whole months since my last adventure, and this was sure a fun way to end the adventure lull. My brother, sister in law, and my nephews live in New York City. Some very good friends of mine also live there. But I've never been...until this weekend. 

This was my favorite Subway station entrance. It's in the side of a mountain on the upper west side. 

It was fun to go grocery shopping with my friend Emily. This is a NYC style shopping cart. 

Before dinner my first night my friend Lindsay and I went on a walk in Ft. Tyron Park as the sun was going down. 

The next morning I got to spend time with my nephews. They took me to Central Park.  NYC involves a lot of walking, so my oldest nephew scoots along on a balance bike like this:

The Caribbean

Emily, an old friend of mine, currently works on a boat. A big boat. Let's call it a ship. She invited me to come sail with her for a week, and, as it is summer, I joined her.  We made a few stops at some islands in the Caribbean, and enjoyed some really pretty sunsets.   

Students, you won't believe it. There was a decades party on the ship. Unfortunately, I didn't have Rosie the Riveter with me, but I think we did ok.  Name that decade!

 

When traveling, always remember your camera and a map.

Charleston, South Carolina

What could be more patriotic than Charleston, South Carolina for the 4th of July?  Charleston doesn't get a lot of attention in Miss Davis' classroom because, unfortunately, early American history (including Civil War) is covered in 5th grade.  Despite this grave misfortune, however, Miss Davis fell in love with Charleston when she visited at the age of 8.  Miss Davis doesn't know why she proceeded in third person, but she will discontinue now.  

To my great delight, one of my dear friends in Birmingham grew up just outside of Charleston, and invited me to spend the 4th of July with her family. What a treat it was.

I love the architecture in old cities. It's my favorite part.
